Hello, dog lovers! This month, I’m clearly on a tech wave. Last week, I wrote about GPS fences, and today, I’ll be looking at another device that’s gaining popularity – the AirTag collar for dogs. Yes, Apple has found a way to think not only about us humans but also about our furry friends.
But is AirTag secure enough for tracking your dog? In this article, I’ll look at the pros and cons of this solution and share why, in my opinion, GPS fences are a better investment.
Pros of AirTag Collars for Dogs
1. Ease of Use
AirTag syncs quickly with Apple devices and provides easy access to your dog’s location information through the Find My app. It offers convenience for dog owners who already use Apple products.

2. Urban Tracking
AirTag works best in urban or populated areas where there are more Apple devices around that can help locate your dog through the Find My network. This can be helpful if your dog runs off in a park or busy street.
Cons of AirTag Collars for Dogs
1. Dependence on the Apple Ecosystem
AirTag works only with Apple devices. If, like me, you don’t use an iPhone or other Apple products, this solution simply isn’t for you. Unlike GPS fences, which can be used with various types of smartphones, AirTag requires you to be part of the Apple ecosystem.

3. Limited Coverage
AirTag uses Bluetooth technology, which means its range is much smaller compared to GPS fences. It relies on the presence of Apple devices near your dog, which can be a problem in more rural or open areas.

2. No Real-Time Tracking
AirTag doesn’t offer real-time tracking like GPS fences. If your dog gets lost in an area with few Apple devices, you may not receive immediate notifications about its location.

Why GPS Fences Are a Better Investment
After considering the pros and cons of AirTag collars, I’ve concluded that GPS fences are a better choice for dog owners who want full independence and security.
- Greater Flexibility GPS fences can be used with different devices and don’t require you to be part of a specific tech ecosystem.
- Real-Time Tracking With GPS fences, you receive immediate information about your dog’s location, whether you’re in an urban or rural area.
- Independence from Other Devices Unlike AirTag, which relies on the presence of Apple devices nearby, GPS fences work through satellite signals and don’t depend on third parties for tracking.
Popular AirTag Collar Models
- FollowPaw This collar is made from water-resistant and durable materials and is compatible with AirTag. Plus, it looks stylish and comes in various sizes.
- TagVault TagVault offers waterproof collars suitable for active dogs that love to swim or roll in the mud.

AirTag collars can be convenient and easy to use for people who are already part of the Apple ecosystem, and they definitely have their advantages in populated areas. But if you’re looking for a solution that works anywhere and offers more secure control over your dog’s location, GPS fences are the better investment.
