Caring for Dogs: Feeding, Bathing, and Grooming

Welcome Back to My Blog!

Today, we will talk about the feeding and care of our furry friends. When and how much should a dog eat? What foods are beneficial and which are not? Raw or dry food? How often should we bathe the dog? And what about trimming nails? All important questions.

Food – When?, How Much?, What Kind?, Routine

Niko loved to eat a variety of foods. He adored raw or partially cooked food. However, he also enjoyed eating kibble sometimes. A true foodie! The rule I tried to follow was to include all necessary ingredients to ensure a balanced and healthy diet.

Essential Foods

  • Protein: Vital for dog development and a key energy source. Found in meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products.
  • Fats: Provide fatty acids important for dog health. The most beneficial fats are found in fatty fish, nuts, and seeds.
  • Carbohydrates: Found in oats, wheat, barley, corn, rice, and more. These grains are a good energy source and often contain a good amount of fiber. Fiber prevents constipation or diarrhea.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: An interesting fact is that dogs can produce vitamin C in their liver, so they don’t need additional intake. However, they need plenty of vitamins A, B, D, E, and K. They also need a balanced intake of minerals like calcium, sulfur, and magnesium.

Schedule

Puppy
  • For Puppies: During the first 1-2 weeks, continue with the puppy’s current feeding schedule. Over the next few months, gradually increase the portions and decrease the number of feedings.
  • For Adult Dogs: Adult dogs have different nutritional needs. Feed your dog twice a day instead of once to reduce stress on the digestive system.

IMPORTANT!!!

  • Be aware of foods that are dangerous for dogs. For example, chocolate contains theobromine, which is harmful to a dog’s nervous system. Additionally, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic can be toxic to dogs.

Grooming and Bathing Your Dog

Proper grooming is just as important as feeding. The main components of grooming include nail trimming, ear cleaning, coat brushing, bathing, and teeth cleaning.

  • Nail Trimming: Regular nail trimming is important to avoid pain and discomfort.
  • Coat Brushing: The frequency of brushing depends on the breed and coat type. Long-haired dogs require more frequent brushing.
  • Bathing at Home: Bathing can be an enjoyable experience for both the dog and the owner. Use an appropriate dog shampoo and be careful when bathing.

IMPORTANT!!!

  • Always reward your dog with treats or play after any grooming activity to create positive associations.
