Welcome back to the world of dogs! In my previous blog post, we discussed how to choose the right dog. Today, we will focus on the key stages of training and socializing dogs, which are essential for developing good behavior.
My Dog Guru – Victoria Stilwell
Before we dive into the main topic, I’d like to mention my dog guru and inspiration, Victoria Stilwell. A renowned trainer and expert in canine behavior, she emphasizes the importance of positive training and building trust through encouragement to achieve a happy and balanced dog.
A crucial part of Victoria Stilwell’s philosophy is socialization. She stresses the importance of exposing dogs to various people, circumstances, and animals to develop confidence and social skills.
Training and Socialization
Training is a process that requires time and patience. Just as young children learn gradually, dogs also need time and consistency in their training. For example, creating a routine before you leave home can help your dog understand that you will return and reduce its anxiety.
Socialization involves introducing your dog to various people, animals, and environments. This process helps build confidence and prevent issues with aggression or fear later in life.
Socialization should begin at an early age, before the dog reaches 16 weeks. This period is critical for forming positive impressions and habits.

What Are the Key Stages and Basic Commands?

Sensitive Phase Period (3 to 12 Weeks)
The period from 3 to 12 weeks is critical for a dog’s upbringing. During this stage, puppies are particularly receptive to new knowledge and experiences. It is essential to start with basic commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, ‘lie down’, and socialize them by introducing them to various people and situations.
Adolescent Period (6 to 12 Months)
During this stage, puppies usually start to show their character. Often, they begin to test boundaries and attempt to assert dominance. It is crucial to not allow this to happen.
Key Things to Teach During This Period:
- Reinforcement of Learned Commands:
Strengthen commands like ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, and ‘lie down’. - Behaviour Control: Focus on controlling any emerging behavioural issues, such as jumping or nipping.
- Introduction of New Commands: Teach more advanced commands like ‘heel’ and ‘leave it’. Consistency and patience are vital during this stage to ensure your dog develops into a well-behaved adult.

Practical Tips
Be Firm and Consistent in Your Actions:
- Ensure that all family members use the same commands and follow the same rules to avoid confusing your dog.
Don’t Be Afraid to Use Positive Reinforcements:
- Reward good behavior with treats, praise, or playtime to encourage repetition of the desired actions.
Be Patient and Understanding:
- Recognize that training takes time and effort. Show patience and provide a supportive environment for your dog to learn and grow.

Maturity Period (from 12 Months Onward)
After the first year, dogs begin to show their true character. Continue with training and socialization to maintain and enhance your dog’s good behavior.
Practical Tips
- Continue Socialization:
- Introduce your dog to new environments, people, and other animals regularly to keep them well-adjusted and confident.
- Maintain Consistent Training:
- Reinforce commands and introduce new challenges to keep your dog mentally stimulated.
- Regular Exercise:
- Ensure your dog gets plenty of physical activity to maintain their health and prevent behavioral issues.
- Positive Reinforcement:
- Use treats, praise, and affection to reward good behavior consistently.
- Monitor Health:
- Schedule regular veterinary check-ups and keep up with vaccinations and preventative care.
IMPORTANT!!!
At any stage of your dog’s development, you will encounter difficulties and resistance. Never hit your dog. Do not yell at it. Do not show aggression in any form. If you want to show that it made a mistake, ignore it for a short time. Remember, dogs are often a reflection of you.
Train your dog in a friendly atmosphere, with love and respect. Always consider the individual needs, character, and emotions of your dog. Do not delay training and socialization; start from an early age.
Do not hesitate to seek advice from a veterinarian or professional trainer if you have difficulties or doubts about training and socialization. There is nothing shameful about that!
Use the internet 😊. Blogs, websites, forums, podcasts. There you can find countless useful information, share experiences, or ask questions. My favorite site is Victoria Stilwell’s (https://www.vsdogtrainingacademy.com/, https://vspdt.com/), where she posts various videos, articles, books, and more. She also answers questions and gives advice to her readers.
Thank you for being with me this week! I look forward to reading your comments on this topic. Do you have your own dog guru? What problems have you encountered in training and socializing your dog? Do you agree with me or not, and why?
On the Blog4Dog Instagram profile, you can read stories about how I trained my puppy Nico, the difficulties I faced with him, and how I overcame them. Also, the mistakes I encountered from my work as a dog sitter.
With a paw on my heart, D.
